Ricky Hatton's Death: Inquest Opened and Adjourned | Former Boxer Found Dead at 46 (2025)

Tragic News: The Inquest into the Life and Death of Ricky Hatton Begins

The inquest surrounding the untimely death of Ricky Hatton, a renowned former professional boxer, has officially commenced and has now been postponed.

At the age of 46, Hatton, a two-time world champion in both the light-welterweight and welterweight categories, was found deceased in his residence located in Hyde on September 14.

During the hearing at South Manchester Coroner's Court in Stockport, it was revealed that Hatton was discovered by his manager, Paul Speak.

Alison Catlow, a representative of Greater Manchester Police, informed the court that Ricky had been last seen by his family on September 12 and seemed to be in good health at the time. However, on the following day, he did not show up for a scheduled event, raising concerns.

On September 14, Speak, who was present in court to advocate for Hatton’s family, arrived at Ricky's home to escort him to a flight bound for Dubai. Tragically, upon his arrival, he found Hatton unresponsive.

Senior Coroner Alison Mutch stated that they are currently awaiting the final determination of the cause of death, with preliminary indications pointing toward hanging. Notably, no family members were in attendance during the proceedings.

A comprehensive inquest has been planned for March 20 of next year.

Following the announcement of Hatton's death, an outpouring of tributes from the boxing community has surfaced. Amir Khan referred to him as "one of Britain's greatest boxers," while Tyson Fury honored him by labeling him a "legend."

Hatton was celebrated as one of the UK's favorite fighters, amassing a dedicated fan base; over 30,000 supporters journeyed to Las Vegas in 2007 to witness his title match against Floyd Mayweather.

Last week, thousands turned out to honor Hatton during his funeral procession, demonstrating the profound impact he had on many lives.

But here's where it gets controversial: What led to the unfortunate circumstances surrounding his death? Could the pressures of fame and the often grueling nature of boxing have played a role? As discussions unfold, what are your thoughts on the mental health challenges faced by athletes? Do you agree or disagree with the idea that more needs to be done to support athletes in their post-career life? Feel free to share your views in the comments; your perspective matters!
